Courtney Dauwalter Makes Trail Running History at UTMB

Team SunGod athlete wins 3x 100-mile races in one summer

Athlete Stories

Team SunGod ultrarunner Courtney Dauwalter made history at the UTMB World Series Finals in Chamonix this Saturday.

After already taking the victory and new course records in both the 2023 Western States and Hardrock 100-mile races, to round off her summer with the UTMB victory was thought to be an 'impossible feat' by many.

But in true Courtney style, she has proved them all wrong as she dominated the 106-mile race throughout, taking the 10,000m+ of elevation in her stride to take the win. With these back-to-back wins, Courtney has claimed what some are already calling the “Triple Crown” of ultrarunning, by winning the historic UTMB ultramarathon in just 23:29:14 - after claiming the top spot in two other 100-milers earlier this summer. This is completely unprecedented, sitting alongside the wins she has chalked up in every other race she has entered in 2023, including Bandera 100k and Trans Gran Canaria. And if Courtney's position as the most successful trail runner in history was ever under question - it certainly isn't anymore.

She raced the UTMB in her prescription sunglasses - SunGod Classics³ - proving the performance of our new prescription eyewear collection on the global sporting stage.

The UTMB results follow a summer of success for SunGod trail running athletes. Tom Evans - who was coming 3rd in the men’s race until he had to withdraw in Courmayeur with debilitating cramp - secured a victory at Western States, becoming the first British man to win; while Courtney smashed the women’s record by 79 minutes at Western States, before going on to win the Hardrock 100, taking the record by 64 minutes, just three weeks later.

Ione Walker, Head of Community at SunGod said: “Courtney’s results in 2023 and today at the UTMB have completely changed the game in trail running. The electrifying noise and excitement around Courtney’s race was a momentous moment for women in sport. Few athletes embody the realness and fun of trail running quite like Courtney, who is quickly becoming established as the greatest trail runner of all time. We are proud to call her a Team SunGod athlete.”

Courtney said: “Any time we’re given the opportunity to try something difficult or crazy [like racing 3 100-mile races in one summer], we should absolutely take it. This was totally crazy, and really really difficult but totally worth it.”
